MO / IL rest rules (St. Louis metro)
Not legal advice. Posted signs still win.
Missouri (MoDOT):
Overnight parking for travelers resting in their vehicle is generally
allowed at MoDOT rest areas / welcome centers / truck-parking sites;
recreational camping is not. No statewide hour-cap statute like NDOT
10h or TxDOT 24h found on MoDOT’s Improve I-70 page or
Rest Area Guide
on this check. Prefer private chain lots for a planned 10-hour HOS break.
Illinois (IDOT):
92 Ill. Adm. Code 533 caps rest-area stays at three hours; sleeping
overnight on the grounds, benches, or in the building is prohibited.
IDOT has stated that, given truck-parking shortages and HOS rules,
trucks are generally allowed to rest overnight in vehicles at rest
areas — the intent is to stop multi-day living at sites
(92 Ill. Adm. Code 533).
Prefer private chain lots for a planned 10-hour break.
