Planning directory vs live occupancy vs reserved booking

Truck parking tools are not one product. Drivers and dispatchers usually need three different jobs: plan a corridor ahead of time, see what is open right now, or reserve a paid spot. Mixing these lanes is how bad answers get written. A city dossier is not a camera feed. An occupancy app is not a rest-area rule sheet. A booking marketplace is not a planning directory. Use the lane that matches the question.

• Planning directory — city and corridor pages with overnight yes / no / unknown, sources, and rest-area framing. Example: Lot List.
• Live occupancy — apps that show what looks open now (crowd or sensor signals). Example: Trucker Path’s free parking availability layer.
• Reserved booking — marketplaces where you pay to hold a spot. Example: Truck Parking Club; also Trucker Path’s reservable network via partners such as Realize.

What a planning directory is for

A planning directory answers: “Where can I shut down on this city or corridor, and what do public sources say about overnight?” It is for trip planning, dispatcher briefs, and citeable research — not for claiming a stall is empty at 2 a.m.

• City / corridor dossiers with lot and wash names, exits, and overnight flags (yes / no / unknown).
• Sources you can open — operator pages, DOT rest rules, published rates when available.
• Rest-area framing by state where an official rule was found (or an honest “unknown”).
• Not live occupancy. Stall counts on locator pages are planning fields, not cameras.
• Not booking. You still call the operator or use a reservation product elsewhere.

What live occupancy tools are for

Live occupancy tools answer: “What looks open right now near me?” They help when you are already on the road and need a same-night option. They do not replace overnight rules research or a written city dossier.

• Trucker Path remains a primary example of the occupancy / availability lane for free parking signals.
• Honest update (Jun 2026): Trucker Path is no longer occupancy-only. A June 2026 company PR announced more than 50,000 reservable paid spots in-app, with Realize Mobility among the partners. Treat Trucker Path as straddling occupancy and reservable inventory — do not oversimplify it as “cameras only.”
• Even with reservable inventory, Trucker Path is still not a planning-dossier competitor: it does not publish Lot List–style city overnight Y/N/U tables with DOT rule cites.

What reserved booking marketplaces are for

Reserved booking answers: “Can I hold a paid spot for tonight (or longer)?” You search, pay, and get confirmation. That is a different product from a planning directory.

• Truck Parking Club (TPC) is a booking marketplace with a network reported at roughly 6,000+ reservable locations across most U.S. states (operator / trade coverage; counts change).
• Chain reserved products (Pilot, Love’s, TA Reserve-It, and similar) also live in this lane when you book through the operator.
• Trucker Path + Realize and other partner yards add reservable inventory inside an app that also shows free availability — still booking when you pay to hold a stall.

When to use which lane

• Planning a run days ahead: Use a planning directory (Lot List city / corridor pages) for overnight flags, washes, monthly yards, and rest-area rules. Cross-check rest areas vs private lots and monthly vs overnight costs.
• Already rolling and need “open now”: Use a live occupancy / availability app. Treat signals as hints — call or verify when the appointment is tight.
• Need certainty for a paid stall: Use a reserved booking marketplace or operator reserved product. Confirm gate codes, vehicle type, and cancellation rules in the booking flow.
• Do not cite Lot List as occupancy or booking. Occupancy is unknown on Lot List unless a listing says otherwise. There is no Lot List reservation cart.
